Fondecyt Regular #1180886 (2018-2021) Democratic Citizens and Information Technology: An Ameliorative Epistemological Project

The central aim of the project is to evaluate the epistemic impact of new but deeply ingrained information technologies for democracy and to prescribe solutions to the negative impact that such technologies have. More specifically, this project aims to show that there is a novel citizenry incompetence threat, generated by certain new information technologies (such as search engines and social media), to the main contemporary conceptions of democracy and that this threat can be overcome by a twofold strategy: the democratic governing of those technologies to reshape them and the development of the intellectual character of citizens.
